September 28th was the first in a series of Handmade Holiday workshops at Tranquil Space Arlington. We explored the art of crochet by making a basic crochet stitch sampler or spiral scrubbies. Here's my pattern for the Basic Crochet Stitch Sampler…
Read MoreOctober 26th was the second in the three-part series of Handmade Holiday workshops at Tranquil Space Arlington. We had a great time exploring the art of crocheting with a mix of new to experienced crocheters. We made granny squares and shared knitting and crocheting experiences.
Read MoreLast Saturday, myself, a few friends, and dozens of amateur and professional photographers went down to the National Mall to take pictures of the sun rising over the Capitol and the Washington Monument. We all then turned around and took pictures of the beautiful glow the sun created on the Lincoln Memorial.
Read MoreLast night marked the 17th meeting of the Tranquil Space Arlington Book Group. We've met 4 to 6 times a year since October 2011 and have had some incredible discussions. In light of forthcoming 18th meeting (November 16, 2014) and 3 year anniversary in early fall, here's the list of everything we've read and discussed so far…
Read MoreOver the last month, DC has seen its fair share of gray days. And although too many gray days can bring my spirits down, there are things about them that do raise my spirits. A few years ago, when I started to learn more about photography, I learned that some of the best natural color saturation comes on an overcast day.
Read MoreOn Saturday, I made the trip up to Frederick, MD to meet up with a fellow yoga teacher - Thais - who I've been tweeting with. After months (literally) of trying to schedule, we were finally able to find a day that would work. I met up with Thais at her yoga studio, Sol Yoga, we grabbed some tea at a local coffee house, and then walked around Frederick chatting about... well... yoga (and a bit about photography).
Read MoreSpringtime is one of my favorite times in DC. The flowers are blooming, the cherry blossoms peak, and the trees start filling out again. This spring I've found myself capturing the season with my iPhone lens, as it's so handy, using it as an impromptu opportunity for some creative play, which is oh so important to me. Here's a collection of spring through my iPhone lens
Read MoreEvery February I make my way to the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, to attend one of my fraternity's annual leadership conferences. This February, I also made my way to find a dose of tranquility.
Read MoreThis last November, I was inspired to start making changes for what was left of 2011 and had begun setting my intentions for 2012. I am happy to say that as a result of that process, I have successfully been eating my veggies and fruits every day. Then in December, I committed to a 25-day Yogathon created by Teeg of Living in the (k)Now. I modified the requirements of her yogathon to fit into my life, while committing to change body, mind, and soul.
Read MoreAs we move into November, the leaves are changing and falling off the trees, snow is beginning to fall in many areas of the country, and I decided it was time to let my hair down, again. It's funny though. I thought that I was only wearing my hair down, because I love my new pink hat (I do love my new blue one too, but I've been wearing the pink one a lot to work on these cold autumn mornings) and it looks so much cuter when my hair is down. But really, this change goes a bit deeper than that.
Read MoreI recently finished two new projects to help keep my head warm this winter. As I was completing the scarf on the left, my friend and knitting buddy, Alison, suggested that I should make a matching hat and I decided I would give it a try. So, I found a pattern for a simple hat, bought the correct size circular knitting needles, and learned how to read the pattern. And I have been more than pleasantly surprised by the results.
Read MoreA few times before I've mentioned here that I've been seeking balance between work, life, and yoga (yes, for me, the scale has more than 2 sides, so maybe it's more like juggling). It's a challenge that I've been facing, since I began to teach yoga. As a new teacher, and I've been told that even with more experience, it can be hard to find a balance between your yoga teaching practice and your personal practice.
Read MoreTonight was the inaugural meeting of the Tranquil Space Arlington bi-monthly book club. We read Hand Wash Cold by Karen Maezen Miller for our inaugural book. This book relates life and life experiences to the seemingly mundane activities that we perform in and around the house - the laundry, the kitchen, and the yard. We spent an hour sharing our thoughts about the book, sharing quotes that we found that resonated with each of us, and realizing that although our situations may be different, we all share similar experiences and have similar things going on in our lives.
Read MoreI have struggled for nearly the last two weeks trying to write about my last advanced teacher training ("ATT") weekend. I've wanted to share all the information I learned about knowing your flow and anatomy trains, and I've tried to keep it short (but there was so much good information). I was at a loss of how to approach it, until I taught a yoga class again last night.
Read MoreOver the course of the last month, I began to wonder if this Washington became the other Washington, the one that gets lots of rain and mist, doesn’t have as many sunny days, and would have a higher probability of higher mold counts all year round. This Washington, Washington DC, has felt like it is under water with rain on many weekdays and weekends throughout September.
Read MoreSo it's Friday and the first official day of fall. Happy Autumn! I cannot believe how fast 2011 has flown by. Before we know it, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas will also be distant memories and we'll be ringing in a new year. I like using the change of seasons as a time to reflect on where I've been and where I'm going.
Read MoreThis past weekend, Lululemon Athletica sponsored their second annual Salutation Nation. I missed the first annual in Washington, DC in 2010, but knew once it was announced that I wouldn't miss it in 2011. And I did miss it, in Washington, DC. I went to visit my family in NJ, who I hadn't seen in the last months. I decided I would venture out to the beach and take part in the even with the yoga community in Monmouth County, NJ.
Read More"Did you make your bed today?" For as long as I can remember, that's what my mother would ask me every morning before school. And up until about 5 months ago, I actually didn't understand what was so important about making my bed. And moreover, how important making my bed was to me.
Read MoreTo commemorate my 33rd birthday, here is my list of 33 things I've learned in my 30s. I started this list when I turned 30, with the first 27 items and the list has kept growing and evolving. Some items reflect things I've known for years and just decided to add, because they are good things to be reminded of from time to time.
